What hiring managers in legal actually want

Legal hiring is filtered first on bar admission and law school, in that order. Make both unambiguous at the top — state(s), year admitted, school, year graduated, honors where relevant. After the credentials, what differentiates candidates is the substantive matter list: M&A, securities, employment, IP litigation, white collar, regulatory. Be specific about deal sizes, case sizes, jurisdictions, and forums (federal vs state, trial vs appellate). For in-house roles, lead with the business outcome the legal work enabled — closed financing, shipped product, resolved enforcement, avoided exposure. Compliance roles add a regulatory framework axis: SEC, FINRA, FCPA, GDPR, HIPAA, FERPA. Conservative formatting is industry-correct; design experimentation reads as judgment failure.
