What hiring managers look for in a QA Engineer resume

QA hiring has quietly split into two very different jobs, and a CV that doesn't say which one it's for reads as unfocused: manual/exploratory testing that hunts for the bugs a spec can't anticipate, and automation engineering that builds the pipeline catching regressions before a human looks at anything. The CVs that get interviews name which side they lean toward and back it with numbers — coverage percentage, flake rate reduced, hours of manual regression eliminated, or the specific class of production incident their test suite would have caught. 'Tested software for bugs' says nothing; 'built the Cypress suite that cut release-blocking regressions from 6 a quarter to 1' says everything a hiring manager needs. Ownership of a CI gate — the thing that actually stops a bad deploy — is the single strongest signal on this CV, stronger than any tool name.

Common mistakes QA Engineer candidates make

Patterns recruiters and hiring managers in this category see repeatedly. Each one is fixable in minutes.

  1. Listing every testing tool ever touched instead of the one suite you actually own and maintain.

Fix: Name the suite, its size (test count or coverage %), and what it catches. Ownership of one real system beats familiarity with ten.

  2. No mention of flake rate or maintenance burden — the two things every engineering manager actually worries about in a test suite.

Fix: If you reduced flaky tests or cut suite runtime, that's a top bullet: it's the metric that determines whether engineers trust the suite at all.

  3. Bullets phrased as 'found bugs' instead of 'prevented incidents' — describing effort instead of outcome.

Fix: Reframe around what shipping without your work would have cost: a production incident avoided, a release delayed and fixed instead of rolled back.

  4. No evidence of collaboration with engineering — QA framed as a downstream gate rather than a partner in design.

Fix: If you reviewed a design doc, flagged an edge case before code was written, or shifted testing left, say so — it signals seniority.

Sample QA Engineer resume bullets

Each bullet follows the Verb–Action–Result pattern: a strong verb, a specific context (tool, scope, decision), and a measurable outcome. Adapt the numbers and tools to your own work — keep the structure.
