Resume Template for Staff Engineer
Scope-of-influence, technical-strategy ownership, and the cross-team work that doesn't fit on a feature roadmap.
What hiring managers look for in a Staff Engineer resume
Staff-engineer hiring is the most over-credentialed and under-differentiated category in tech CVs. Most candidates list senior-engineer-grade bullets and hope the title sticks. The CVs that land senior staff and principal interviews show scope-of-influence: technical strategy you authored that multiple teams adopted, system-wide migrations you led, design reviews where you shaped other teams' decisions. Bullets at this level should describe leverage, not output. 'Wrote the platform-tenancy design doc adopted across 14 services' is staff-level work. 'Built the X feature' is senior-level. The fastest screen: can the candidate point to a piece of writing — an RFC, a design doc, a deprecation plan — that other teams used as their default? If yes, the staff label is earned. If no, the CV reads as inflated.

Common mistakes Staff Engineer candidates make
Patterns recruiters and hiring managers in this category see repeatedly. Each one is fixable in minutes.
Senior-level bullets reused with the title changed to staff.
Fix: Reframe at least 5 bullets to describe cross-team leverage, not single-team output. That's the literal definition of the level.
No design doc, RFC, or writing artefact surfaced.
Fix: Add the doc you authored and the teams that adopted it. Staff impact is mostly written.
Ignoring mentorship and technical leadership work as 'soft skills'.
Fix: Promote it. 'Mentored 6 senior engineers; 2 promoted to staff' is a top-three bullet at this level.
All bullets are about systems you built; none about systems you killed or deprecated.
Fix: Surface a deprecation you led. Killing the right system is staff-level judgement; building yet another is not.
Sample Staff Engineer resume bullets
Each bullet follows the Verb–Action–Result pattern: a strong verb, a specific context (tool, scope, decision), and a measurable outcome. Adapt the numbers and tools to your own work — keep the structure.
Authored the platform-tenancy RFC adopted across 14 backend services; cut per-team customer-isolation work from a month to a week.
Led the deprecation of our legacy event bus, coordinating migration across 22 services and 9 teams over 4 quarters with zero customer-facing incidents.
Owned the API design review programme; mentored 6 senior engineers as design-review approvers, distributing what had been a bottleneck for the org.
Co-authored the company's engineering-strategy document with the CTO; informed roadmap planning across 7 teams.
Resolved a 14-month-old reliability debate by shipping a 2-week prototype that proved the planned multi-region architecture was unnecessary; saved 3 quarters of work.
